On April 6, 2026 the Spring Lake Park City Council voted to fly the Old MN State flag by a vote of 3-2. All public input presented at the work session that evening and the Council meeting that followed opposed this action. At best this is a conservative political dog whistle, at worst 3 members of Council voted to do to the residents they serve the very thing they objected to the State of MN doing to them. In response to this vote, residents of this community would like this matter revisited. If you agree, please sign the petition below.

Demand for Reconsideration and Public Hearing Regarding the Display of the Former Minnesota State Flag

To the Mayor and Members of the Spring Lake Park City Council,

We, the undersigned residents of Spring Lake Park, formally object to the Council’s April

6, 2026, 3–2 vote to approve Resolution 2026-19 directing the display of the former

Minnesota state flag.

This decision was made despite clear public opposition, including testimony and written

comments from community members. Moving forward with this action without broader

engagement undermines public trust and does not reflect the will of the community.

We Demand the Following:

  • Immediate reconsideration of Resolution 2026-19, Directing the Display of the

Former Minnesota State Flag in City Council Chambers and Authorizing its Use

at City Facilities.

  • A formal public hearing to allow full and fair community input before any further

action

The Council has a responsibility to represent its residents—not override them. When a

decision generates this level of public concern, it must be revisited in an open and

transparent forum.

We expect the Council to correct course and give the community a meaningful voice in

this matter.

Sincerely,

{Your name will be here}

  1. This should never of been brought up. It’s a flag. It represents our state in today’s climate. The Mayor should be more concerned about moving SLP forward than keeping his buddies happy, and if he can not keep his focus towards the future, then he needs to resign.

  2. It’s racist because the old flag’s imagery places Indigenous people in a diminished position behind a settler, reflecting a colonial hierarchy rather than equal representation. I DO NOT AGREE WITH PUTTING IT BACK TO BEING RACIST.
