The questions of “why this issue?” and “why now?” are entirely reasonable. With so many challenges facing our community and the world, debating a flag policy may seem like an unnecessary distraction — yet it reflects a deeper concern. In recent years, some members of this Council have increasingly prioritized their own preferences or the demands of a vocal minority over the voices of the broader community. They are disregarding the many residents who have written, attended meetings, and spoken in opposition to this measure. No evidence was presented at either the work session or the Council meeting showing that any residents support it. That leaves us with a troubling question: If certain Council members are unwilling to listen to voters and taxpayers on an issue this minor, how can we trust them to represent us on matters of far greater consequence?
Why this issue, why now?
